Badminton Newfoundland And Labrador – Coaching Education Beginning In March 2022

Posted on March 1, 2022

BADMINTON NL will be focusing on coaches’ training over the next year, and particularly from now until November to meet the following needs.

Future Canada Games and Provincial Team Coaches need a minimum of Competition Development (Certified) to meet the requirements for Canada Games and Badminton Canada competitions.

The Canada Games Manager also needs a minimum of Competition Development (Certified) to be selected as early as for CWG 2023.

Coaching in the Field of Play in a Badminton NL tournament requires Competition Introduction (Trained) – while there is a waiver for teachers and coaches who have not had the opportunity to be trained, this is a requirement that eventually must be met.

A number of coaches have completed Module 3 of Competition Introduction, and a few other courses, but need to complete training for certification.

The majority of training will be provided online, particularly for Competition Introduction. Some multi-sport courses offered online by Coaching NL are considered equivalent.

Those interested in increasing their coaching certification are encouraged to attend a mix of Coaching NL or Badminton NL online courses, whichever are most convenient.

The Tactical – Technical modules will be provided live in classroom or gym. Normally, the modules which provide instruction on preparing a practice should be completed first.

In addition to providing the NCCP training modules, Badminton NL will also:

  • Record the completion of all training
  • Assist coaches in the creation of their portfolio of coaching experience
  • Compile records for submission to Badminton Canada when training and certification are complete

Ensuring that coaches receive certification upon completion of requirements requires greater attention and reliability.

For those coaches who complete Competition Development and are involved in provincial team training, a High Performance Coaching Course will be provided to optimize the preparation of those players we send to competitions against other provinces. This HP Course is currently in draft but near completion.

Anyone who is interested in participating in coaches education under the coordination of Badminton NL are asked to contact the undersigned.
Please provide your NCCP number (if you have one) as well as a summary of courses completed.

Note that training completed under the “OLD NCCP”, that is Level 1 Club Coach, Level 2 Regional Coach, or Level 3 Provincial Coach, are no longer valid.

Online coaching modules are expected to begin in March, and tentatively provided on Wednesdays from 6:00 – 10:00 pm, NL time (actual sessions may vary in length but not exceed the four hours).

John Gillam, ChPC, ACD
